I mentioned on the podcast that I was attending the 40th Anniversary Reunion of KUCI 88.9 FM DJs out at UCI campus earlier this month. While not many of my former alumni were there, I did run into a few old friends. Plus I got to see a 70’s student film made by then-DJs filmed in the old studio, which was pretty awesome. Best of all, I was amused by this archival cart, which had to be explained to all the new kids who play mp3s at the station now. 🙂
As promised, this week I present a special artist feature on loopmaster extraordinaire, The Grooveblaster. Gerry and I spoke via phone about his long musical history and the process of creating his new album, Cities, Streets & Bebop Nights. He shares lots of really interesting stories, and coupled with the tunes, I think this feature will give you a nice portrait of the man behind the music. Hear how Gerry had his MySpace account unceremoniously deleted, was denied digital distribution by CDbaby, was contacted directly by a band to ‘cease and desist’, and how he turned his musical career around from outlaw underground remixer to chic retro-lounge downtempo fave of KCRW DJ, Raul Campos, as we preview tracks from his latest album, Cities, Streets, & Bebop Nights.
As I contributed vocals and lyrics to 3 of the tracks, I’m really excited about the album, but honestly, the whole thing is fantastic and includes collabs with the great Yasi Baby of Pacha Massive and posafe artist, Laura Harley, as well as great instrumental tracks with a sexy retro feel. I put this podcast together last week while recovering from a flu that postponed my camping trip. Back home from a quick camping trip on Catalina Island, feeling a wee bit sunburned but happy. Leaving felt like being expelled from Paradise, I have to admit. Ryan and I had the whole campground to ourselves so we could just totally chill out on the beach, watch the sunset from our favorite hiking spot, and play music around the fire at night without a care in the world…
