Hope all my fellow Americans are having a nice Thanksgiving holiday! I must admit I was starting to grow melancholy over the year’s end, but between all the kind messages coming in from Lovespirals fans and this mix of upbeat electropop and downtempo music, I can’t help but smile. There truly is much to be thankful for, not the least of which is the amazing variety and depth of  podsafe music this year! Lots of new bands are included to the show this week, and all but one song is a free download. Hurrah!

Every Day Is Halloween – Postmarks

Just thought I’d pop in to send you a little Halloween love with this free download by one of my fave indie pop bands, The Postmarks. Artist of the Week: 7 Day Visa

7 Day Visa is the musical project of electronica producer, Jamahl Richardson AKA Natural Fact. After having toured Japan with Chillcast regulars, The Shanghai Restoration Project, Richardson was inspired to create music based on his experiences in this new country. The result is an 8 song album, Tokyo, which truly brings to life the sounds of this magical city in musical form. It’s almost hard to believe these songs were created by an Oakland native living in Brooklyn! Not only is the music of this album totally engrossing — yet fairly laidback — but the accompanying artwork and website add even more to the experience. Be sure to read the “scrapbook” segment of 7dayvisa.com to learn more about each song’s inspiration — complete with gorgeous photography — and the “sights and sounds” section for additional video footage and photos set to a sampler of music from the album. Even more exciting is that this is just the first in a planned series of travel-related albums from 7 Day Visa, released on the Undercover Culture Music label (run by Dave Liang of Shanghai Restoration Project) . You can be sure you’ll be hearing more about those on upcoming episodes!

Chillcast #185: Unwind

This week’s episode is quite reminiscent of my short-lived podsafe music podcast, Unwind, which – in case you aren’t familiar with it – was designed to be listened to as you drift off to sleep. You see, I had a mind shattering headache the day I put this together, so I really needed to keep things chill. Expect a soft mix of quiet sounds, soothing voices, and beautiful atmospheres in this one-hour show. I am taking “chillout” to a whole new level – so kick back, relax, and enjoy!

Artist of the Week: Merge of Equals

Germany’s Sine Music has become a staple of The Chillcast with their steady flow of laid back compilations such as Chillbar, Cosmic Chill Lounge, and Cool Off Chillout. One of the acts that consistently stands out from these collections is, without a doubt, Merge of Equals. Zurich producer, Flavio Maspoli, has collected 18 of his moody chillout singles to create the first-ever artist album for this comp-centric label. And the timing couldn’t be more perfect! With summer in full swing, this hour and a half long mix of lush instrumentals and exotic vocal tracks is sure to set the mood for drinks with friends out under the stars on those long, warm nights. Now you know I love female vocals so I’m pleased to note that this album features an International mix of lovely singers including Gina Estrada, Shunnae Love, Megumi, Sitta, Kotomi, and Fiona Daniel. All in all, Merge of Equals’ Intoxicating certainly lives up to it’s title with dreamy soundscapes and a loungey Ibiza mood.

Wanted to share this really cool music video by MC Yogi in support of Barack Obama. The “Vote for Hope” video was created at Ursa Minor Arts and Media in San Rafael, CA with chief animator James Curtis, using designs and direction from MC Yogi. Video funded and supported by grassroots donations. Read the artistic statement behind the video:

With the 2008 presidential election, Americans face a pivotal choice between not just two candidates, but two paradigms. We need someone who understands the complexity of our time. Someone who believes in investing in renewable energy, in education, in women’s rights, in civil rights, in healthcare for Americans. Someone who believes in dealing with global issues with diplomacy so we can restore our respect in the world. Barack Obama represents the change we need and can lead us into a brighter future.

“Vote For Hope” was written to encourage and inspire the hip hop generation—and everyone—to get involved, and contribute their time, energy, creativity, and other resources to be the change they want to see in the world.
