Matthew Ebel show in SL

Britney and Anji at Hummingbird
Hung out with Britney and The Diva last night at the Matthew Ebel – aka “Hali Heron” – show at the Hummingbird in Second Life. Wow! He really gives it his all when he performs! It’s crazy to be watching a giant bird in a white tux make that music. He’s completely charming in between songs, too, always mentioning the tippers by name and responding to chat threads. Total pro, all the way. I think he’ll definitely be featured on the next Unwind. Oh, check out my new SL glasses! They look just like my RL glasses.

Little getaway to an old hangout

Anji at Redondo Beach Pier

Had a nice trip down memory lane yesterday, strolling on the Redondo Beach Pier with Ryan. Hadn’t been there in ages! I think the pier has been completely rebuilt since last I visited; I seem to recall an aged wooden pier while now it’s virtually all concrete. Still, the rad old-school game place is intact, packed full of antique games as well as newer ones. From wooden horse races to electronic dance pads, the whole history of public game machines is there! I played a few rounds of skee ball, a rip roaring fun game of air hockey, and tried my hand (or should say “feet”?) at a new fangled dance game – boy did I stink at that! It was so foggy down there that I felt like I had taken a trip up north somewhere, like Santa Cruz. Also checked out a few of filming locations from The OC, like the “The Pier Diner” and “The Bait Shop”. (That’s it in back there below…) Fun times!

Redondo Beach Pier and Boardwalk

Anji Riel’s Second Life

Anji Riel
Logged into Second Life a few times this week. Attended the Dean Koontz reading yesterday, chillin’ at the Crayonville amphitheater. Every time I see CC in game, there’s too much going on for us to really chat, and then the event is over and he logs out. Sigh. I always meet someone cool when he’s around though! This time it was a vintage designer who liked my hair, and a gal name Absolut Smirnov who runs a vintage themed event, called Rivers of Venus, Sundays at 4pm. I’m going to try to stop by soon.

Bolsa Chica Wetlands Restoration

Anji @ Bolsa Chica Wetlands Took a spontaneous trip to see the back side of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands area that is undergoing restoration. I know I shared a photo or two of the new inlet that was built, well, that feeds into the wetlands. Now the wetlands are more beautiful than ever, with much more water and wildlife. People are also replanting several areas with native plants, so I look forward to watching those mature over time. I had a very strange experience around sundown; way back in the last bit of accessible trail, I was looking into a protected fenced in area and noticed a large animal. I realized it was a coyote, likely hunting some of the rabbits and squirrels I’d been watching. He started ever so slowly making his way towards me, never looking away from my face. He was a backlit, so I couldn’t really see his eyes, but I felt as if they were locked onto mine. He was big and very healthy looking. I felt truly sorry for him, because I could plainly see house construction going on not far from the edge of the protected area, just at the ridge of the nearby hills. I knew his area was diminishing fast, and his very life could be at stake. People buying brand new million dollar homes don’t generally take kindly to coyotes. I was kind of lost in the moment, watching him, feeling compassion, feeling sadness, when he suddenly lifted his head to sky and began wailing. He looked back at me and continued to bark in an agitated way. Then I noticed a second, possibly even larger coyote moving quietly towards the first one. It was time for me to move on. While what the Amigos de Bolsa Chica have finally accomplished after 30 years is wonderful, it’s still sad that developers can not see how important it truly is to have open space, and that this scaled back version of their project is still going to heavily impact the ecosystem. It has been extremely hard for me to watch the steady development of Southern California over my short lifetime.

Superbowl Sunday

Anji at Stuporbowl
Yesterday I attended Stuporbowl 2007, a very fun party that’s become a tradition with the B-Siders. Last year it didn’t happen because the bowling alley they’d been having it at for years was closed down, but this year a few kind folks put together a new venue that was bigger and better, near LAX. The football is really just an excuse to get together, the DJs, dancing, theme costumes and bowling take center stage. The partying was definitely a lot more low-key than when I first started going in the 90’s, but it was great to catch up with some folks I hadn’t seen in ages! Almost forgot — it was so crazy to see Kevin Rose in the GoDaddy commerical!!! He is so cute…

A Very Merry Unbirthday To Me!

Pooh & Anji

Thanks to everyone who sent me birthday wishes yesterday, including fellow ShowGirls, Cali and Karla. Ryan took me to Disneyland for the second consecutive year — as much to get his Dole Whip fix as to show me a good time, I suspect. Ha! He got a bunch of cute pix of me with Disney characters, and Pooh here was actually getting a bit fresh. You’ll have to check out the next episode of Chillin’ with Lovespirals for all the details…

Anji & PizzaBabe in Second Life

Anji & Jenny "PizzaBabe"

Dropped into Coffee with Crayon in Second Life this morning and met PizzaBabe (aka Jenny Shackle). She gave me a grand tour of Shackles Shack, including her brand new theme room motel. Looks like it’ll be quite the party palace! Once it gets into full swing, it’ll be like a scene out of The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty. Very naughty! I really loved the trailer park area outisde; made me want to quote Pink Flamingos.

The Mandarins: Simone de Beauvoir

Last night I finished reading Simone de Beauvoir: A Biography – all 600 something pages of it – then launched right into her own 600+ page book, The Mandarins. Man, the first chapter alone was so poignant; I found myself exclaiming, “Harsh!” out loud after reading the final scene between Henri and Paula. I can certainly see why the friends she patterned these characters after would be upset… I have to admit that this is actually the first de Beauvoir book I’ve read. I picked up the biography because I’ve read so much about the turn of the century French art and intellectual scene, I though I might enjoy her story, as well.

I’d read Jean-Paul Sartre’s Nausea, a few years back. I found it in a box of Ryan’s college books. He said he didn’t care for it, but I enjoyed it. Of course, I also enjoyed Crime and Punishment, which a lot of folks seem to find unreadable these days. I have a pretty high tolerance for “unreadable” literature in general, owning a fairly complete collection of William S. Burroughs and more than one book each by Gertrude Stein and James Joyce. (I was going to type a tongue-sticking-out smiley here, but on second thought, it seemed inappropriate.)

My favorite writer for years and years was Anais Nin, whose prose work is also a bit ah… what is the word I’m searching for? Formless, perhaps? I think everyone agrees that it is her vast journal writing that is most fascinating, but still, I own everything. Fills up a whole bookshelf. Perhaps one day I’ll make a page on the site to list some of my favorite books.
