Chillcast 90 Min Party Mix

Even though I promised to take last week off from the show, I ended up creating this 90 minute DJ mix with some of my fave fun upbeat retro-edge tracks from the past 2 years. Many of these tunes have been featured on the show, but there’s a few great tunes you’ve not heard before. I put this set together intending to drop it at my all-raw-vegan-desserts birthday party this past Saturday, but I ended up enjoying dancing to Justin and Ryan‘s sets so much that I didn’t get around to it! However, I danced around my kitchen as I created raw brownies, cookies, and pie the night before. Oh, there’s no show intro or outro on this, since its not *technically* a Chillcast, but a DJ set. Enjoy! (And be sure to grab all the free downloads included)

Chillcast Video #49: Anji Bee

The final 2010 episode of Chillcast Video features a little holiday surprise I put together for you!  Three days into editing together footage for this music video I almost gave up, but I’m glad I pushed through and got it completed.  Thanks to my Lovespirals partner, Ryan Lum, for his production genius on the tune and filming assistance on the video. I hope you enjoy my new single and video called “Happy Holidays.” You can download this video for FREE from the Lovespirals Vimeo Account. The song is available now on iTunes, Amazon, eMusic and other digital music retailers.

Anji Bee Releases Holiday Single

“Happy Holidays” is the first all-original holiday song released by vocalist/lyricist, Anji Bee, who’s perhaps best-known as the hostess/producer of weekly electronica music show, The Chillcast. Co-written with Ryan Lum (of Lovespirals and Love Spirals Downwards), Bee has crafted a deceptively bittersweet pop nugget filled with heartugging disco-infused violins, funky bass and wah guitar, and a relaxed house beat with a hint of cool wintry nights wafting through. Bee’s warm, enveloping vocals pleasantly recall Tracey Thorn (of Everything But The Girl) and Karen Carpenter with their laid back yet passionate delivery and personal holiday message.

Sometimes in the midst of the holiday hub bub of parties and pretty blinking lights one finds themselves reminiscing of the past and wanting to reconnect to a long lost loved one… just to say “Happy Holidays!”

Podcasters and Internet or Traditional Radio DJs are free to include “Happy Holidays” in their shows. Check out Anji Bee on Mevio’s Music Alley, formerly known as the Podsafe Music Network.

Chillcast Video #45: Lovespirals

I’m excited to announce the world premier of a brand new video for “Believe” by my band, Lovespirals. I created this video with behind-the-scenes footage taken during writing, recording and production sessions for our album, Future Past. I also included some non-studio footage of Ryan and I filmed during that same time period. We like to think it gives you a better feel for our musical inspirations. “Believe” is our favorite song from the album, so this was a special project to work on. I hope you dig it! Check out the Lovespirals blog post about the HD Video for “Believe.

New Music From Anji Bee

There’s lots of new Anji Bee tunes in the works with a variety of musical collaborators, and I’m pretty excited about everything that’s going on! First and foremost, I’d like to officially announce that I am currently in the process of recording the first Anji Bee branded album. Woot! After a decade of releasing one-off singles containing my lyrics and vocal arrangements with various artists from all over the world, I thought it was high time I collected together all of my favorite ideas into one perfected package. You can expect to hear many of your favorite tunes from over the years, plus some brand new tracks co-written with my longtime musical partner, Ryan Lum, of Lovespirals. We’re working more closely than ever to bring my songs to life in the most polished versions possible. You have no idea how hard it is for me to keep these tunes under wraps…

Aside from this massive project, I have also contributed vocals/lyrics to new songs by Falling You, The Grooveblaster, and Karmacoda for their next albums. I also have a new single with Nick Murray, called “Have I Known You,” coming out on Loverush Digital this summer. I understand there will be several remixes by other dance music producers on the single, but I don’t know who yet! And speaking of remixes, several new ccMixter-related songs have come out recently using my vocals from the CC Asia Band project. One of these was just released on a 2-CD set by Buddha Bar DJ, Benoit Cassar, for the 2nd installation of his compilation series, Danai. “Buddhahood (ft. Anji Bee)” is included on Danai, Vol. 2 (CD 1: Camera Rolling), available now on iTunes, eMusic, and Amazon. Then there’s the “Floating Buddha Mix” by ccMixter producer, Vo1k1 of “Crossing the Pond,” which is a free download. The final collab I’d like to mention is an amazing rework of my vocals from the 2007 song, “En La Oscuridad,” that I recorded for Creative Commons band, Moosefrog. Jamahl of 7 Day Visa created a very sexy new version called “Que Quiero” for his new album, Buenos Aires, due out this summer.

And last, but not least, I’ve been wrapping up work on a big remix project for Lovespirals which should see the light of day in a few weeks. The ‘Love EP’ will contain remixes by a variety of indie artists (and friends) including Chill Factor-5, Divasonic, Xurba, 7 Day Visa, Falling You, and Soul Whirling Somewhere. This is a very unique remix set which moves between upbeat dance mixes and moody ambient versions of this track from Lovespirals’ new album, Future Past.

Chillcast Video #37: Lovespirals

I am super excited to present the world premier debut video from my band, Lovespirals! Ryan Lum and I have been creating music together for the past decade, but this is the first time we’ve ever released a music video. I created it myself using HD footage we filmed at the beautiful Newport Back Bay estuary, combined with footage from the ride home after mastering our new album, Future Past, in Northern California. I’m also excited because Ryan and I recorded a brand new version of The Chillcast theme song — which is now smoother than ever — plus I gave the Chillcast Video a new look and feel, from the intro, to the audio, to the show logo. Basically, I’ve been a very busy bee the past few weeks! I really hope you enjoy it all and look forward to your comments. Today’s video is for the song “Home” from Future Past released on iTunes Jan. 1st. Chillcast Artist of the Month: Lovespirals

Lovespirals is the musical project of musician, Ryan Lum, and vocalist, Anji Bee – your humble Chillcast hostess… We’ve just released our 4th full-length album, Future Past, on our own label, Chillcuts. A limited edition 6 panel eco-friendly digipac was pre-released over the 2009 winter holiday via the Lovespirals webstore, where Ryan and I personally autograph CDs by request from fans — and as a special treat, we have been including a free high-quality mp3 download with all CD sales for instant listening gratification. The official release of Future Past, however, was January 1, 2010 when it launched on iTunes and Amazon.

Lovespirals Completing 4th Album

Lovespirals are in the final stages of producing their 4th full-length album, tentatively titled, Future Past. The 11 songs comprising this new collection include some of the band’s most ambitious work to date. Band founder, Ryan Lum, has achieved what he feels is truly a big-studio sound in his private home studio. His attention to detail in sound design is born of a true love of the craft, and he’s been perfecting these skills since his first indie release, Idylls, back in 1992. Lum has updated his musical equipment and recording system quite extensively since Lovespirals’ 2007 album, Long Way From Home. This might be most noticeable to the listener in the range of guitar and keyboard sounds used on this album. In addition to the Rhodes piano and Hammond organ featured in the past, Lum has enhanced his vintage keyboard palette with analogue synth and string machine sounds. And guitar tones too have been pushed into new future retro sonics, utilizing both vintage and modern boutique guitars, tube amplifiers, and effects pedals.

Band vocalist, Anji Bee, who began collaborating with Lum in the early 2000’s, has also worked hard to improve upon her sound and performances. Armed with a new microphone, cabling, and preamp, she has pushed her voice to new heights, exploring diverse vocal territory. From deep, sultry rhythm and blues soulfulness to bright, ethereal breathiness — and all points in-between — from a single voice to a 3-part harmony; Bee is the vocal equivalent of a one-man band. And lyrically, Bee has dug deep to unearth some of her most revealing and intimate lyrics yet. Though her song topics have always touched upon more than personal relationships, the abundance of such fare in the past has led critics to label Lovespirals as purveyors of “love songs.” Bee feels confident that will not be the case this time. Interestingly, the two songs most obviously tied to romance are not ballads, but upbeat numbers; “Feel So Good” is soulful funk with a distinctly retro feel, while “Love” is an atmospheric drum ‘n’ bass song, reminiscent of the duo’s earliest work together.

Lovespirals listening to a song playback in studio

Not that this new album is wholly composed of electronica vibes; on the contrary. Lovespirals have achieved a fine balance between their various influences, including moody classic-rock ala Pink Floyd or Fleetwood Mac; groovy late-period Motown soul & funk; bittersweet electropop in the vein of Air or Zero 7 — with a sprinkling of sensual slow-burning blues, and a dash of the soaring ethereality that the band has long been known for. Somehow Lum and Bee are able to take such disparate elements and combine them into an easily identifiable sound that can only be described as “Lovespirals.” Though it’s hard to label their music for today’s highly genre-defined culture, Lovespirals are not concerned. The joy of independent music is that it is not bogged down by marketing research and sales strategies; it exists because of the creator’s love of music. And Future Past is certainly a labor of love for Lovespirals.
