Against The Wall Tee Graphic by Anji Bee

During the discovery phase of compiling the upcoming Positive Influence anthology, I cam across a drawing I did for Against the Wall back in 1988. This thin marker sketch with a bit of stippling and a bit of cross hatching is very indicative of my style at that period. The simple black and white designs xeroxed well thus were perfect to use for zines and flyers. This is the same drawing style I used for the New Age Records logo graphic. If memory serves, this drawing was done as a potential cover for the first Against the Wall single that was going to be released by New Age, the label of Against the Wall member, Mike Hartsfield. The Identify Me‘ single ended up being released by Nemesis Records in 1989 with a completely different cover.

Falling You bandleader, John Zorko, joined Anji Bee in her home studio, along with fellow guest vocalist, Danielle Colbeck, to record an interview with John Diliberto for the nationally syndicated radio show, Echoes. This short artist feature focused on the new album, ‘Shine,’ which has been getting a lot of airplay on the show recently. Though the feature already aired live on the radio, you can now listen to the Echoes Falling You Feature podcast directly from their website.

New Age Records Release Retro Logo Merch

A 1988 illustration by Anji Bee for New Age Records is making a comeback! This pen and ink drawing of a straight edge guy jumping while pumping his fist was used in the early days of this So Cal hardcore punk label. Nearly 3 decades later, the label is dropping tees, hats, and buttons with this iconic drawing that in all honesty, was drawn to look like Anji’s Positive Influence zine partner, Buster Cates. Foolish (Lyrics)

“Foolish”  Love Me Leave Me LP (2013)

I really can’t explain
What’s come over me
I’m still not sure if it’s
All just my fantasy
But yet I feel like this
Was somehow meant to be
Even if it seems like
Impossibility

Am I foolish?
To believe this is real
Can I trust the way I feel?

Will I wake up one day (wake up)
Will I wake up one day (wake up)
Will I wake up one day and say
I was foolish?
(x2)
I was foolish

In my life I have never
Fit the mold
To be different you
Must make your choices bold
Coz in this world it seems
Our future’s bought and sold
When you find something good
You must grab a hold

Am I foolish?
To believe this is real
Can I trust the way I feel?

(Chorus)

Foolish
Foolish

(Chorus)

NOTE: These lyrics were originally written in 2003 for a collaboration with Realm that never happened, so this is the first recorded version of them. I vaguely remember writing down them after a session of posing for some art students. I used to write a lot of lyrics in my head while I was working as life model.

Saudade (Lyrics)

“Saudade”  Love Me Leave Me LP (2013)

In every crowd I see your face
In every face I see your eyes
In every place I hear your voice
In every voice I hear your sighs

Like a vine clings to a tree
How your memory clings to me
Pulling me back
Like a ship out to sea

(repeat)

Note: While many of the songs on the Love Me Leave Me album were new productions of older collaborations with various online musicians, this was a brand new song written during the album recording sessions. Anji had long wanted to write a classic style Brazilian song, so she was thrilled when her long time musical partner, Ryan Lum, offered to help write a vintage Bossa Nova track with her. Not only did he perform all of the music, but he added in backing vocals, too, to recreate that Joao and Astrud Gilberto feel. The lyrics were taken from some poetry Anji had written years earlier, which she set to Ryan’s music.
