Chillcast Interview Feature with Lovespirals

This week I present a special one-hour interview feature on my band, Lovespirals. My partner, Ryan Lum, and I sit down to discuss our brand new 4th album, Future Past, and give an overview of the band’s decade-long history. We’ll be sharing every song on the album as we chat about our writing and recording process including our musical influences, album concepts, and the various stories surrounding our songs and albums. Really hope you enjoy the feature, and if you’d like to hear more interviews with us, follow the Lovespirals Mixcloud account!

Chillcast Video #37: Lovespirals

I am super excited to present the world premier debut video from my band, Lovespirals! Ryan Lum and I have been creating music together for the past decade, but this is the first time we’ve ever released a music video. I created it myself using HD footage we filmed at the beautiful Newport Back Bay estuary, combined with footage from the ride home after mastering our new album, Future Past, in Northern California. I’m also excited because Ryan and I recorded a brand new version of The Chillcast theme song — which is now smoother than ever — plus I gave the Chillcast Video a new look and feel, from the intro, to the audio, to the show logo. Basically, I’ve been a very busy bee the past few weeks! I really hope you enjoy it all and look forward to your comments. Today’s video is for the song “Home” from Future Past released on iTunes Jan. 1st. Become a fan of Lovespirals on Facebook to interact with the band and fans or just follow Lovespirals on Twitter to keep up with the latest news.

Chillcast Artist of the Month: Lovespirals

Lovespirals is the musical project of musician, Ryan Lum, and vocalist, Anji Bee – your humble Chillcast hostess… We’ve just released our 4th full-length album, Future Past, on our own label, Chillcuts. A limited edition 6 panel eco-friendly digipac was pre-released over the 2009 winter holiday via the Lovespirals webstore, where Ryan and I personally autograph CDs by request from fans — and as a special treat, we have been including a free high-quality mp3 download with all CD sales for instant listening gratification. The official release of Future Past, however, was January 1, 2010 when it launched on iTunes and Amazon.

Lovespirals Completing 4th Album

Lovespirals are in the final stages of producing their 4th full-length album, tentatively titled, Future Past. The 11 songs comprising this new collection include some of the band’s most ambitious work to date. Band founder, Ryan Lum, has achieved what he feels is truly a big-studio sound in his private home studio. His attention to detail in sound design is born of a true love of the craft, and he’s been perfecting these skills since his first indie release, Idylls, back in 1992. Lum has updated his musical equipment and recording system quite extensively since Lovespirals’ 2007 album, Long Way From Home. This might be most noticeable to the listener in the range of guitar and keyboard sounds used on this album. In addition to the Rhodes piano and Hammond organ featured in the past, Lum has enhanced his vintage keyboard palette with analogue synth and string machine sounds. And guitar tones too have been pushed into new future retro sonics, utilizing both vintage and modern boutique guitars, tube amplifiers, and effects pedals.

Band vocalist, Anji Bee, who began collaborating with Lum in the early 2000’s, has also worked hard to improve upon her sound and performances. Armed with a new microphone, cabling, and preamp, she has pushed her voice to new heights, exploring diverse vocal territory. From deep, sultry rhythm and blues soulfulness to bright, ethereal breathiness — and all points in-between — from a single voice to a 3-part harmony; Bee is the vocal equivalent of a one-man band. And lyrically, Bee has dug deep to unearth some of her most revealing and intimate lyrics yet. Though her song topics have always touched upon more than personal relationships, the abundance of such fare in the past has led critics to label Lovespirals as purveyors of “love songs.” Bee feels confident that will not be the case this time. Interestingly, the two songs most obviously tied to romance are not ballads, but upbeat numbers; “Feel So Good” is soulful funk with a distinctly retro feel, while “Love” is an atmospheric drum ‘n’ bass song, reminiscent of the duo’s earliest work together.

Lovespirals listening to a song playback in studio

Not that this new album is wholly composed of electronica vibes; on the contrary. Lovespirals have achieved a fine balance between their various influences, including moody classic-rock ala Pink Floyd or Fleetwood Mac; groovy late-period Motown soul & funk; bittersweet electropop in the vein of Air or Zero 7 — with a sprinkling of sensual slow-burning blues, and a dash of the soaring ethereality that the band has long been known for. Somehow Lum and Bee are able to take such disparate elements and combine them into an easily identifiable sound that can only be described as “Lovespirals.” Though it’s hard to label their music for today’s highly genre-defined culture, Lovespirals are not concerned. The joy of independent music is that it is not bogged down by marketing research and sales strategies; it exists because of the creator’s love of music. And Future Past is certainly a labor of love for Lovespirals.

I was torn between naming this episode “Over 2,000,000 Served” in honor of the podcast reaching a new download landmark or after the Winter Music Conference going on in Miami this weekend. WMC won because I want to draw attention to some great special permissions tracks by hot artists who will be part of massive parties at WMC. Lots of upbeat new tunes this week, I think you’re gonna dig it…

The Machine Has (A) Heart

So I mentioned on The Chillcast a few episodes back that I met my favorite Laker, Sasha Vujacic. The guy is super nice, very kind to fans, and honestly seems like a regular guy, albeit a very attractive regular guy. Anyway, I’ve been following his career the past few years and have always been impressed by his passion for the game and his devotion to the Lakers. He obviously loves playing for them, not only from his actions on court, but from the things he says in interviews.

This past summer, his contract was up for renewal and it was pretty touch and go there for a minute as to whether or not he would be back with the Lakers. I was stoked when they worked it out and he ended up with a 3 year contract. Then some rumors popped up last month about possibly trading Sasha… Yikes! And the other night Phil Jackson accused Sasha (“The Machine”) of having “no brain.” Wow! Low blow…

I decided I should finally get off my ass and go down to Staples Center — where I haven’t attended a game since it first opened — to see them play the Heat, another pretty amazing franchise. I got killer seats right next to the tunnel leading to the locker room, with a great view of the Lakers’ bench, and a great view of the basket. And… I made a little sign to give Sasha some support. Yes, I felt like a big dork, but what the hell? I had more fun watching that game than I can remember having in months. What a blast!!!

Oh, the really crazy thing about all this is that it turns out poor Sasha was having back spasms during the game, which goes to show how much heart he really has. I hope he feels well soon so he can meet up with the team for the San Antonio game Wednesday night.

Anji with KUCI’s Archival Cart

Anji Bee @ KUCI FM

I mentioned on the podcast that I was attending the 40th Anniversary Reunion of KUCI 88.9 FM DJs out at UCI campus earlier this month. While not many of my former alumni were there, I did run into a few old friends. Plus I got to see a 70’s student film made by then-DJs filmed in the old studio, which was pretty awesome. Best of all, I was amused by this archival cart, which had to be explained to all the new kids who play mp3s at the station now. 🙂

Chillcast Feature on The Grooveblaster

Download Grooveblaster Feature Promo (60 sec mp3)

This week I will present a 60 min Artist Feature with The Grooveblaster on Chillcast with Anji Bee.

Hear how Gerry had his MySpace account unceremoniously deleted, was denied digital distribution by CDbaby, was contacted directly by a band to ‘cease and desist’, and how he turned his musical career around from outlaw underground remixer to chic retro-lounge downtempo fave of KCRW DJ, Raul Campos, as we preview tracks from his latest album, Cities, Streets, & Bebop Nights.

As I contributed vocals and lyrics to 3 of the tracks, I’m really excited about the album, but honestly, the whole thing is fantastic and includes collabs with the great Yasi Baby of Pacha Massive and posafe artist, Laura Harley, as well as great instrumental tracks with a sexy retro feel. There are a number of songs available on the podsafe music network to play on your show:

Thanks for checking out the promo. I appreciate any support you can lend in getting the word out about both this feature and Cities, Streets & Bebop Nights!

Chillcast #134: CC Asia Band Contest

Back on The Chillcast #122, I presented a spotlight on the CC Asia Band project that I took part in. At that time, the collection of 21 songs known as CABACA had just been released digitally on the Jamendo and StreetVoice websites. Now the CABACA album has been released as a gorgeous limited edition CD, as well. On top of that, the ccMixter community has been hard at work creating remixes using various files taken from the songs, sometimes a vocal, sometimes an instrument. This episode is a collection of some of those remixes. These songs are all Creative Commons licensed free downloads!
