Lovespirals “Heartstrings” Digital Single Released

Part Dream Pop, part Americana, the new single from Anji Bee’s band, Lovespirals, is considerably more upbeat than “Brother Against Brother,” the first single. Band founder, Ryan Lum, juxtaposes driving blues riffs and dreamy shoegazer guitar, finding a delicious balance between his earlier Love Spirals Downwards work and more recent Lovespirals work. Anji’s vocals exude the confidence born from years of familiarity with the material, with a lovely harmony of her natural earthy tone and haunting upper register.

“Heartstrings” has been 12 years in the making, beginning as a collaborative idea between Lovespirals and indie electronica duo, Beauty’s Confusion. The song was based around an acoustic guitar loop of Ryan, to which Chris of BC added beats and a Johnny Mars-esque electric guitar. The project came to an standstill over artistic differences, and in 2005 Anji sent her vocal files to DJ Pain 1 to gauge interest in the project. He quickly created a demo, featuring an amazing rap with his friend Guante. He wasn’t satisfied with the mix, however, and his version fell by the wayside, as well.

In 2007, Anji resuscitated the project as the theme song to a music podcast, enlisting Ryan to add his signature guitar leads to the original demo and to professionally record the chorus vocals for a shortened edit. The song lay dormant, once again, until production on Anji’s first solo record began in 2010. She was determined to create the definitive version of “Heartstrings,” building upon the 2007 version. The ensuing recording had such a strong Lovespirals vibe that it was decided to hold onto the cut until the band was ready to release their next album. Which brings us to this, the final version of “Heartstrings.”

Chillcast #444: Bring Back The Summer [Mixcloud Podcast]

Its First Friday and believe me, this is no April Fool mix here, it’s real real. If you’re currently enjoying Spring Break, then you may already be feeling some summer vibes, but I’ve been nursing a sprained ankle, so all I’ve got is music to keep my mood high. This mix flows from melancholic soul and chill urban tracks to way upbeat future beats and bass with a nice pop kick. Lots of great vocals featured, including some primo remixes as well as originals. Check my SoundCloud playlists for the free downloads: https://soundcloud.com/chillcast

Oh yeah, there’s some definitely NSFW content in this mix… 😛

Chillcast #442: I Hate U I Love U [Mixcloud Podcast]

I scoured SoundCloud this week for the chillest, sexiest, most loved up new future sounds for your listening enjoyment! There’s lots of new artists and producers in today’s one hour set, as well as few of the old faves. This vocal-focused set starts out hella vibey and builds energy, with more 8-bit influences creeping in for the second half. There’s a few remixes here but its mainly originals. Most everything should still be up for free D/L, so go snatch up ’em up while you can from my SoundCloud playlist: https://soundcloud.com/chillcast/sets…

Chillcast #441: Let Me Love You [Mixcoud Podcast]

Couldn’t resist doing another Valentine’s Day mix for the Cupid’s Hunt Podcast Collaboration that’s been going on since 2008. This year, I combined my celebration of love with the celebration of the 10 year anniversary of The Chillcast, by selecting one romantic or sexy song from each season of the show. Its interesting to hear the evolution of the music over the past decade from mellow chilled out electronica to the more edgy urban crossover sound of recent years. There’s a lot of good memories tied up in this selection of songs, and I hope you’ll enjoy the mix as much as I do. Wishing you LOTS OF LOVE this Valentine’s Day, and every day!!!

Chillcast #440: Tell Your Friends [Mixcloud Podcast]

Now that I’m totally free of any responsibility to networks, I decided to try something different, taking advantage of Mixcloud’s more permissive rules regarding music usage. Today’s mix is made up of original album cuts, rather than bootleg remixes, underground producers or “podsafe” music. I recently discovered the site, FreeLegalMusic, that lets you download free music via your local library, and was surprised by how many great new hip hop and r&b albums and singles they offered! All of these artists have previously been featured on the show, but most of them were remixes, so I thought it would be nice to share their music in its original, intended form. Let me know what you think in the comments below or over atwww.facebook.com/chillcast !

Chillcast #439: 4 Monkii [Mixcloud Podcast]

The first Chillcast mix of 2016 is for my bestie, Monkii! It’s a bit of a digital crate dig mix, with some older tracks from 2012 thru last year. I’ll get back on the “all new tunes” episodes soon, don’t worry! Dunno what my release schedule will be yet now that I’m totally network-free, but I love doing the show, so I’m sure I’ll drop mixes at least once a month. Stay tuned for more! Much love….

Chillcast #437: Quitters [Mixcloud Podcast]

Machine.FM is calling it quits this December, due to lack of listener funding and increasing station costs. The Chillcast has been with The Machine for the past 2 years, so this is a tough break. We were all hoping that some solution would present itself, but, I guess things are tough all over. I threw together this last minute episode to get the word out about the station going radio silent, but letting folks know that The Chillcast will not be silenced. There’s too much great much out there for me to stop!
