Chillcast #177: Dreamy World

This week’s one hour episode is a bit more moody than usual with a lot of dream pop and world beat music thrown into the mix. Ambient and ethereal are the order of the day, with plenty of gorgeous female vocals – and some male vocals, as well. I present some great new special permissions music as well as some solid new Podsafe tracks, including several nice free downloads. For those of you in the wintry part of the world, this mix should suit your long dark nights quite nicely… As for the rest of us, it serves as a reminder that cold days are just around the corner.

Help the La Jolla Seals Remain

Can you believe that Attorney Paul Kennerson has been working hard for years to remove the beloved La Jolla seals from “Children’s Pool” at Casa Beach? Everybody else seems to loves them as they are a huge draw for tourists and locals alike. Now that seals are in trouble all up and down the coast, it seems a particularly poor idea to kick them out of this little cove. On top of that, the plan for removal of the seals is to play a recording of dogs barking 24/7, to the tune of $700,000 a year. What???

This is a special birthday episode for my favorite person in the world — Ryan Lum! I started this playlist back during the Wimbledon Open, thinking it would be a cute play on the word “Love” but it has since evolved with the addition of new music that fits the theme. Artist of the Week: Merge of Equals

Germany’s Sine Music has become a staple of The Chillcast with their steady flow of laid back compilations such as Chillbar, Cosmic Chill Lounge, and Cool Off Chillout. One of the acts that consistently stands out from these collections is, without a doubt, Merge of Equals. Zurich producer, Flavio Maspoli, has collected 18 of his moody chillout singles to create the first-ever artist album for this comp-centric label. And the timing couldn’t be more perfect! With summer in full swing, this hour and a half long mix of lush instrumentals and exotic vocal tracks is sure to set the mood for drinks with friends out under the stars on those long, warm nights. Now you know I love female vocals so I’m pleased to note that this album features an International mix of lovely singers including Gina Estrada, Shunnae Love, Megumi, Sitta, Kotomi, and Fiona Daniel. All in all, Merge of Equals’ Intoxicating certainly lives up to it’s title with dreamy soundscapes and a loungey Ibiza mood.

Ryan and Anji bring you a final update (*crossing fingers*) on the noisy neighbor’s construction project and getting back into the studio to record again. Lots of talk about Lovespirals’ new song, “One Of Those Days,” plus a preview of it at the end of the show. Ryan describes his new Howie pedal and how it mimicks a Dumble amp sound which leads into to a conversation about various studio upgrades the band have made this year. They also discuss the their recent quest for an outside recording space, share the religious experience they had at the final Clapton & Winwood show at the Hollywood Bowl, mention their excitement at going to see Doyle Bramhall II with the Arc Angels this week, and talk about participating in the Meals For Seals sponorship program at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.
