Artist of the Week: Sleepthief

Justin Elswick gives us a taste of what’s to come on the new Sleepthief album with his first single, “World Gone Crazy.” This digital release includes 5 remixes, all featuring the vocals of Coury Palermo, formerly of the band Lynden. His emotive voice sounds amazing in each musical setting, and I must point out that the vocal production is simply outstanding in every mix. If this is an indication of what we can expect from the new Sleepthief album, then it should prove to be truly top notch. I would have loved to hear the original version on this EP, but I guess we’ll just have to wait for the full album. Meanwhile, the Sensory Gate mix has the sort of lush melancholy I’ve come to expect from Sleepthief releases, while the Psychosomatic mix throws a bit of radio friendliness into the production, and Nick Murray – as could be expected – gives it the full club treatment. By the way, there was apparently a bit of a mixup with the masters and so iTunes is currently offering the demo version of Murray’s mix. I’m told it should be updated by the end of the week. If you are a completist, you may want to grab this soon-to-be rarity from iTunes while you can.

Chillcast #171: Be Free

I had totally forgotten about Independence Day when I sat down to make the playlist this week, so I scrapped it and started fresh to create a full hour of good, good vibes – to quote the amazing new Sara Tavares song I open up this set with. Look forward to an eclectic mix of sounds and styles including World, Downtempo, Electro, House, and Funk — all guaranteed to put you in the best of moods! Plus 6 totally legal free downloads – something to celebrate, indeed.

Sasha Fan Spotlight on Anji

My fangirl status has just reached another high today as I am in the Fan Spotlight on the official site of Laker guard, Sasha Vujacic. OMG! As of today, when you visit vujacic.net, you will see my little face TWICE on his homepage; once for said spotlight, and the other for the Ask Sasha A Question area, which I posted about previously. This is actually my third time making the news on Sasha’s site. I was also one of 3 “Vujachicks” features in an article called Sasha Spirit showing various fans holding up signs for Sasha at Lakers games. Please read my Sasha Vujacic Fan Spotlight interview and feel free to leave a comment there on the site.

Anji on Friday Favecast MJ Tribute

Download Friday Favecast: Remember the Time

My friend and fellow podcaster, Fave Nitemare, put together a fine tribute episode of his award-winning Friday Favecast in honor of the passing of pop legend, Michael Jackson. He sent word out through Twitter that he was looking for audio comments for the show, inviting folks to share their memories of this iconic entertainer. In addition to talking about how MJ influenced my own music growing up, I suggested Fave play the sexy Todd Terje mix of Jackson’s soulful 70’s song, “I Can’t Help.” There’s a lot of really great MJ related music in this episode, so be sure to check it out: Friday Favecast: Remember the Time (official shownotes et al.).

Chillcast #170: Rest In Peace

This was one of the tougher episodes to make, quite frankly. One never knows what to say in the wake of unexpected deaths, and here I was trying to figure out the best way to talk about Andy Hughes when the news of Michael Jackson came in. And all of this on top of the ongoing struggle in Iran, not to mention the death of Charlie’s favorite Angel. Plus rumors have been swirling about Sasha Vujacic being traded and various other celebrities dying — all very distracting and non-chill… That being said, however, I think I managed a pretty tight one hour mix for you that’s about half contemplative downtempo and half upbeat dance music. I hope it brings you some peace of your own.

OM Records’ “First Lady of House,” Colette has just embarked on a massive House FM summer tour with DJ Heather, so I thought it was a great time to feature her on Chillcast Video. Check out this sexy video for the song, “If,” from her 2007 sophomore album, Push. You can find tour dates on Colette’s MySpace page. This full hour episode is dedicated to our beloved L.A. Lakers who just won their first NBA Championship in 7 years. Congratulations also to team captain, Kobe Bryant, for additionally winning the Finals MVP award.  As I type up shownotes, I’m sitting here drinking a cuppa joe out of my new Sasha Vujacic mug given to me by one of my fellow Vujachicks at a fun viewing party for game 4. OK, I swear, no more Lakers posts or tweets for awhile. I’ll be switching to Wimbledon and Roger Federer any day now. LOL!

Sasha Answers Anji’s Question

There has been one burning question on my mind for Lakers’ guard, Sasha Vujacic, now that he has won his first NBA Championship: are you going to cut your hair? I asked him about his pledge to not cut his hair until finals were over on his official website – sashavujacic18.com – and was surprised to receive an answer almost immediately! You’ll note the poor grammar of my question, I am sure. Originally my question also included his pledge to not shave during finals, as well. Since he went back on that promise, I guess he decided to skip that part.

picture-4 If it were in my power to decide for him, I would have Sasha keep his beard and mustache shaggy as well as his hair, exactly as he looked the night I was lucky enough to bump into him at the Nokia Theater. Mmm… I’m happy to see reiterated in Sasha’s Exit Interview that he won’t be cutting his hair “too much.” Phew!

Stay tuned for The Chillcast #169 tomorrow, which will be a 1 hour set of songs dedicated to Sasha Vujacic and the Lakers congratulating them on winning the NBA Championship this year!

Congratulations LA Lakers!

Congratulations to the Lakers for winning the 2009 NBA Championship! I have not been able to buckle down and get focused on any work today, as I’m too darned excited. I have no idea if I can make it out to the big Lakers Parade this Wednesday, but my heart will be there in spirit. This win has been a long time coming for Kobe Bryant, who was actually my first Lakers crush back when he had that cute little fro… I’m super happy Derek Fisher was back with us for this win, and really wonder if we could have even done it without him! Anyway, I know this isn’t a sports blog, but anyone who follows me knows by now that I am a fan, as weird as some of you seem to find it. And you know what, I think I just might have to pick up one of the Lakers 2009 Championship Tees from Footlocker for 15% off using my promo code AFAnjiFL.
