Chillcast Video #46: Samantha James

I’m pleased to welcome the lovely Samantha James back to Chillcast Video. She last graced the show on Chillcast Video #6 in early 2008! OM Records recently released a video for the title track to her latest album, Subconscious, on Vimeo. Filmed in her hometown of Topanga Canyon, the “Subconscious” video has a cool hippie vibe and Sammy is drop dead gorgeous in it! Chillcast #240: Moody Mix

A ton of new music just flooded in from bands, labels, and music bloggers. Honestly, it was hard to contain myself to an hour long set. Especially after that extended Halloween DJ Mix I did last week! But I managed to distill it all into a streamlined moody mix that’s just perfect for the warm windy nights we’re having in So Cal. NOTE: These lyrics were originally written during Lovespirals’ 2001-2002 ‘Windblown Kiss’ writing sessions, inspired by an instrumental track by Sean Bowley. They were first set to music in May 2004, when I collaborated on a song idea with Chris Caulder, based around an old acoustic guitar riff by Ryan Lum that I found on a backup disc. Before the song was completed, Chris moved to another state and was without a studio for awhile, leaving the project in limbo. In February 2007, Ryan and I produced an abbreviated version of the song using Chris’ musical demo — adding Ryan’s guitar lead and my vocals — to use as the theme music for a short-lived podcast called Lovely Ladies. We are now completing a totally new recording of the song for my debut solo album with different music and updated vocal harmonies.

I swear, sometimes the shows just put themselves together. Checked out some cool new promos this week which suggested connections to other recent promos, and before ya know it, I had one tizight little mix goin’ on! Electronica subgenres have evolved to the point that I am seriously confused as to how to classify the music I’m playing — but I think I can safely say there’s some pretty cutting edge stuff here. Look forward to lots of great vocals with personality galore and hooks you can not deny. This is an upbeat but slightly dark set, well suited to late night listening driving alone on an empty highway or just chillin’ with headphones in your bedroom.

I’m excited to announce the world premier of a brand new video for “Believe” by my band, Lovespirals. I created this video with behind-the-scenes footage taken during writing, recording and production sessions for our album, Future Past. I also included some non-studio footage of Ryan and I filmed during that same time period. We like to think it gives you a better feel for our musical inspirations. “Believe” is our favorite song from the album, so this was a special project to work on. I hope you dig it!
