Chillcast #232: Edgily Chill

After last week’s extended 2 hour episode, we are back to our standard one hour format this week. I’ve got some slightly edgier stuff in the mix, but there’s still plenty of chill to keep the mood just how you like it. Look forward to a nice balance of vocals and instrumentals, as well as downtempo and upbeat tunes. Today’s 1 hour show is a pretty classic summertime Chillcast mix; you’ve got a number of genres represented here with both vocal and instrumental pieces. We start out with dub, move into downtempo chillout, pick it up with deep house, then a little drum ‘n’ bass, and bring it on home with a killer dance pop track. Freedom to Share Remix Event

Anji Bee has contributed an accapella to the big ccMixter Freedom to Share remix event going on right now. The community remix site is responding to recent attacks made by ASCAP against the Creative Commons license concept. This event seeks to “demonstrate the power of creative collaboration using Creative Commons licenses.” If you’d like to get involved, you can create your own remix using any of the Freedom to Share accapellas, including Anji Bee’s “We Are Connected” vocal. A number of completed mixes are already available for download and reuse in podcasts, vidcasts, radio, and various other non-commercial purposes. You have until August 28, 2010 to upload your remix!

Personally, I’ve been thrilled by the interactions I’ve had with musicians and other vocalists working within the CC format, and have no problem with making some of my work available under the Attribution-NonCommercial license. In  2007, I contributed vocals to 2 songs on the Creative Commons free download album, Adrift, by Moosefrog and in 2008, I contributed vocals to 2 songs on the massive CC Asia Band project, CABACA. I have since made several other vocals and spoken words available on ccMixter.

Somehow I managed to say “fantastic” no less than 3 times in the intro of today’s show and I decided that wasn’t half-bad as the subtitle. I’m going with an ever-so-slightly more ambient mix of tunes, with dashes of dream pop, and plenty of downtempo and chillout vibes. Their latest album includes several collaborations with lovely vocalist, Andreya Triana — who just released her debut solo album on Ninja Tune. Their first single, “The Keeper,” is a sensual neo-soul downtempo song. Chillin’ with Audra

This weekend I got a chance to hang out with friends and fellow former Projekt Records label-mates, Audra. I hadn’t seen brothers Bart and Bret Helm (also of Black Tape for a Blue Girl) in years! They drove down from Arizona ( along with their drummer, Jason) to play a show at Club Eterno, in Los Angeles, on Saturday night. This was the first time I had heard the post-Projekt material from their latest album, Everything Changes. The band have definitely evolved their sound over the past few years, with a slightly more aggressive edge and more of a rock feel. Their live set was very confident, too. Check out this video I shot of their new song, “Syd Barrett.”

NPR Quotes Anji Bee

National Public Radio is in the midst of a radio series called, “Hey Ladies: Being A Musician Today,” using research gathered from questionnaires answered by hundreds of women working as musicians and/or vocalists today. Additionally, they are publishing solid articles on their music blog, The Record: Music News from NPR. In the latest installment, “Pop Star Pomp, Real World Circumstance“, writer Frankie Kelly includes a quote by yours truly:

But some say they’re annoyed by what they see as attention-grabbing antics. Do pop stars’ constructions (be they costumes or stage sets) put pressure on less well-funded women musicians to be outrageous, to get more naked or cross more lines just to get noticed?

Anji Bee, Lovespirals: From my perspective, the most important thing is to develop a strong internet presence that includes quality audio, video, and photos. The more professional you come across, the more likely people are to take you seriously. I personally wouldn’t rely on gimmicks to get attention, but that seems to be working out for Lady Gaga, so who am I to say anything against it?

For the record, the question I was answering was: “What advice would you give to a woman musician just starting out?” You can read all my responses to the NPR Hey Ladies questionnaire.

This is a great series which includes many fantastic female artists who gave much more interesting answers than I did in my questionnaire, and I highly recommend you check it out!
