Today’s musical guest is the English crooner, Findlay Brown. I have fallen in love with his brilliant remake of Joe Smooth’s 1989 hit, “Promised Land.” Mathieu Tonetti directed this retro-styled video starring Camelia Belle for Record Makers, whom he’s done a lot of work for. Beware, there is a little nudity — though not as much as the “uncut” version of the “Promised Land” video on Vimeo. This video is set to the original mix of this lovely cover, but you can catch a number of different remixes on The Chillcast with Anji Bee, including the Hypnolove mix on last week’s Chillcast #273: Male Vocals. Chillcast #273: Male Vocals

As I was putting together this week’s playlist, I noticed that I had a plethora of male vocal tunes in the mix. As its historically been rather rare to hear male vocals in electronica, I thought I’d capitalize on this opportunity to features all male vocals this episode. And oh, what nice vocals they are! From playfully soulful to moody and dark, this mix runs the gamut. Overall, though, I’d say there’s a preponderance of dreamy tunes in this set. There’s quite a few free downloads this week, so enjoy!

After podfading for 3 months, Ryan and Anji return to the podcast to fill you in on everything the band has been up to recently. The duo realized that some major life changes and events have taken up a lot of their usual creative time, including having air conditioning installed in both home studios, upgrading WordPress on the band website and hunting down various resulting issues, planting and maintaining a fairly extensive organic home garden, and taking care of Monster the Cat after a sudden turn in his health. The busy duo also found time to take a few trips to see friends and attend concerts, and still was able to work on a new series of songs. Plus Anji had several new collaborations released, created a video for “Try To Forget,” did an interview with MusicTap, and more. Listen in for all the details and hear an intimate demo of Lovespirals most recent song in progress at the close of the show.

Matt Rowe of MusicTap recently interviewed Anji Bee for a feature on the newly revamped music site. Entitled, Quality Time With Anji Bee of Lovespirals and Chillcast, the piece goes into some depth about Anji’s thoughts on the current state of music while looking into the origins of her Chillcuts Digital label, the creation of her new The Chillcast with Anji Bee: 5 Years of Chillin’ compilation, and how she selects music for her weekly podcast, The Chillcast with Anji Bee. Matt has been a long time supporter of Anji’s band, Lovespirals. He featured the duo in 2006 with his MusicTap piece, Honey and Cool Jazz ‘n’ Rock: An Interview with Ryan Lum and Anji Bee of Lovespirals.

Anji Bee on New Dame-Music Comp

Hot new dance record label, Dame-Music, celebrates it’s first year anniversary with the eclectic double vinyl 12″ set, Potluck. Label founder and successful DJ/Producer, Bloody Mary, has compiled an amazing group of new collaborations between various Dame artists for this set. The opening track is her own collaboration with fellow Berliner, SIS, featuring vocals and lyrics by Anji Bee. “Cast Out Of Paradise” is an epic 13 and a half minute deep minimal tech house song with a very moody and slightly dark feel. Also included are collaborations between Komaton & Cesare vs Disorder, Sierra Sam & Tolga Fidan, Quenum & Paris the Black FU, and Timid Boy & Marco Resmann, plus an exclusive track by Jozif, who’s just joined the label’s roster of artists. It is now officially summertime on my little part of the globe. Today was our first truly warm day, too. My precious cat, Monster, has been feeling much better, my heirloom tomato plants are producing their first ripe fruits, and things are generally looking pretty dang good!
