This week’s has a mellower mood with a focus on more Ambient and Dream Pop styled music. It was inspired by 2 recent Magnatune releases. Noticed I didn’t use any music from Promonet this week, and just one from the Podsafe Music Network. The rest of the lineup comes directly from the bands or labels as special permissions tracks. Thanks to Projekt, Robert Rich, and All India Radio for the use of their music.
After a year’s hiatus, the show has returned to celebrate the Lovely Ladies of Ryan Lum! Hee hee. This show has been a long time coming, just like the release of new CDs by two of Ryan’s former collaborators, Suzanne Perry and Jennifer Ryan Wilde. I thought I’d put together a set in honor of we female vocalists that have worked with Ryan for your listening pleasure. As for the future of the show, I’m thinking I can do it monthly, and am already looking forward to the next edition, as I have more great music with female vocalists waiting in the wings…

Just got a copy of the new Melou album and it is great. To celebrate, I’ve got a fantastic mix of “lovely ladies” tunes — all from 2008 — plus a Melou CD giveaway! This is the second 45 minute mix, and I think the extra tracks make it that much more fun. It sure is nice to get back to some vocal driven songs after last week… Oh, and for an extra special treat, stay tuned to the very end of the show for a bit of news directly from Kirsty Hawkshaw!
Melou’s fantastic sophomore album, Battery Park, is out now and you can get your hands on a free copy simply by posting a comment on this post, right here on anjibee.com! I will select a winner at random no sooner than 6/17/2008 - so get to it and good luck!
For your listening pleasure, whether on your computer or iPhone - yes, your iPhone! - I present two tasty mixes on the cool new Muxtape service; Lovespirals Muxtape and Anji Bee Muxtape. The former is a mix of the more ethereal dreampop of Lovespirals and instrumental Love Spirals Downwards songs, while the later is a selection of various bands featuring the vocals and lyrics of yours truly. Anji Bee collabs include a brand new one with Chandeen, plus a recent Moosefrog track, plus cuts with Bitstream Dream, Plastic Chair, and more. So come listen, enjoy, and pass the link on to a friend! By the way, you geeks out there might want to check try creating a Muxtape Jukebox using Coverflow in Fluid [video].
The first review of the upcoming Chandeen album, Teenage Poetry was recently posted on the band’s MySpace page:
Teenage Poetry is a long awaited jewel, a breathing, timeless work that rewards the patient listener with a moving, tear-inducing “hidden track” featuring Anji Bee of Love Spirals Downwards. It is lovely that such music is still produced today!” - Ecki Stieg
Some readers are probably scratching their heads wondering who this Love Spirals Downwards is, so I’ll fill you in; that was the original name of Lovespirals way back in 1991 with former vocalist, Suzanne Perry, (who would surely balk at my name being linked to the pre-2000 history of the band). In fact, only 1 song with me has been released as “Love Spirals Downwards” and that was a remix we did for Claire Voyant in 2000, so my vocals weren’t even involved - just my mad mixing skills.
In any case, a very positive review, and one which makes me anxious to hear the rest of the album for myself. Teenage Poetry is due out March 28, 2008 on Chandeen’s own Kalinkaland label.
ReGen Magazine is currently featuring Lovespirals front page with a great new interview by Matthew Johnson. Ryan and Anji discuss their musical influences, recording techniques, and how their music has evolved from Windblown Kiss to Long Way From Home. The band also talks about Love Spirals Downwards, the podsafe music movement, Second Life, the digital music revolution, Radiohead’s new album, and more.
