While putting together today’s play list I seem to have taken a bit of a dark turn. In this one hour set of often pop edged electronica tunes, there is quite a bit of darkness, but there’s also a lot of power. With generous helpings of old time blues and jazz amongst the uber modern electronica productions, there are some very interesting contrasts going on. He recently made the official video for his recent single, “The Day,” available as a free download on the Moby Vimeo page in a sweet hi-res format. The Destroyed (Deluxe Edition) iTunes LP includes a behind-the-scenes video for “The Day” — as well as 3 videos Moby filmed himself using a camcorder. Oh, and yes, that is the actress Heather Graham in the video!

As I was casting around for show subtitles this week, I tried to mentally sum up the musical theme; the music is partly mechanistic but also quite soulful in spots, and then it hit me: the Filterwolf song title was perfection! In addition to describing the music mix, it has the added bonus of being an allusion to Sasha Vujacic, who is slated to return to play with the Lakers for their first game of the Western Conference Finals this weekend. GO MACHINE! GO LAKERS! OK, Vujachick fangirlism aside, this is an interesting episode filled with a kind of cosmic, other-worldly beauty.
